I'm Rod Scivyer. Former draughstman, motorcycle racing champion, theater scenery maker, life model, grand prix race mechanic, manufacturer of carbon fibre parts for racing motorcycles, motorcycle stylist and part time photographer. I have taken photographs of just about everything over the years but only got serious about it 20yrs ago when I decided to attend art college to learn more about it. Not long after that I also became involved in the fetish/bdsm scene. For some years photography then took a back seat whilst I earned a living helping to design motorcycles for Triumph, although the involvement in the bdsm scene continued and evolved. Now retired I took up the camera again late in 2009 and, thanks in no part to the lovely *Pinkerbell2 my artistic interest turned to fine art nude and particularly bondage photography. I'm now busily trying to learn as much as I can about rope bondage in order to benefit that side of my work. Of course things are a bit different now as I'm having to find my way around the digital world instead of film :) but I think I'm getting there with the encouragement of the models and other photographers.
I'm always on the lookout for models to collaborate with but you do have to be totally comfortable with total nudity in a bdsm environment and the occasional outdoor art nude adventure.

Rod,

Just completed my first visit to your gallery, and greatly enjoyed it. It's interesting to me how very different your B/W shots are from your color photography. Entirely different sensibility, even when the theme and the model are the same. It's as if (at least to me) your photographer's eye switches to a different mode entirely. And not just because of the color. Don't know, exactly. I'll have to think about it.

Obviously your models are really comfortable with you and what you wish them to do. Their ability to arch and twist and present is exceptional, and your camera does them proud. You're clearly expert in the use of shadow and shading to create facets, hollows, definition, etc., and your compositional sense seems, to me anyway, really wonderful.

On bondage photography, a couple of thoughts:

First, you seem for the most part to stay away from gags as props. There are maybe 2-3 shots using gags in your gallery so far. I think this is quite nice, actually. There are plenty of galleries here at dA where gags are used a lot, often in very inartistic ways, often spoiling the shot in an attempt to be more erotic. But I don't think your style needs those props. You let the models' bodies do the work.

Second, it seems that to this point you've adopted the "artsy" look for your models' facial expressions: you know, the model-runway, look-into-the-distance, I-don't-give-a-fuck, this-isn't-really-me type of thing. I'm wondering if you'd consider beginning to explore more intense and emotionally communicative facial expression in your shots. Let the models' eyebrows, mouth shapes, eyes, cheekbones, etc. speak louder. Just a thought, and a wish....

Finally, in your profile page intro you say you're learning more about ropes and knots, etc. Do you mean shibari and other similar genres? If so, I want to express my two cents: you don't need to get more complicated. Your work currently is very, very expressive using bondage ranging from very simple (and realistic) ties to moderately complicated. Any more so would seem to me to render your work into a very different category, where the ropes and knots themselves become the focus of the photographer and the challenge to the viewer, and the role of the model disappears into being just so much putty for shaping into extreme and highly unusual shapes. Yes, there are lovely Japanese aesthetic theories to support all that, and it's okay, and perhaps worth exploring a bit. But I think you'd lose a lot, maybe more than you'd gain. I like the connection between the models and their bondage that I find in your work, and I'd hate to lose it. There's a lot less eroticism in ropes than in human beings.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

Thanks so much for displaying your work for us to appreciate. I'm looking forward to returning again and seeing what new things you've been up to.

Wow what can I say.

Firstly very many thanks for taking the time to look at my work and for putting together such a comprehensive comment on it.

I find your comments on the rope work very interesting and having given some thought I think you are actually very right. Too much knowledge of rope tying could well end up with a result which would look too 'tidy'.

As regards the models facial expressions. Difficult one for me because I like to let the models do their own thing to a great extent. That way I think things look a litle less contrived and the models are more relaxed. All of them have a connection with the 'fetish/bdsm' scene and I get a great deal of feedback and input from them which helps me and them to feel comfortable with making the images that we do.

Again very many thanks for the feedback and the 'very' constructive criticism, it was a joy to read.
